Big Lots Update: Stores Saved, Employees Retain Jobs!
Big Lots fans, there’s a twist! While the company announced going-out-of-business sales earlier, there’s now good news. Big Lots has agreed to transfer many assets to Gordon Brothers Retail Partners, LLC. As a result, 200-400 stores could remain open, with employees keeping their jobs!
Gordon Brothers, known for brands like Roses Express and Maxway, operates primarily in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. Though specific store locations haven’t been confirmed, it’s likely these areas will see stores stay open.
This agreement is still pending approval from the Bankruptcy Court, but it’s a hopeful development. High inflation and interest rates had pushed Big Lots into Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September. Stay tuned for updates as more details emerge!
Walgreens Closing 1,200 Stores
Walgreens announced plans to shut down a significant number of 1,200 locations in the US, but has not announced which one will be closed! The decision of store closings is driven by rising costs, reimbursement challenges, and competition from online retailers.
Rue21 to Close 540 Store Locations
The teen apparel retailer Rue21 has announced they will close all of their remaining 540 locations. After filing bankruptcy for the third time, you can expect all stores to start closing sales soon. It’s not available online shopping, but you can stil access the list of rue21 locations.
Express To Close 95 of 500 Stores
Fashion retailer Express has filed for bankruptcy and is set to close 95 of its over 500 stores. This decision marks the beginning of closing sales at nearly 100 locations. Their stores that are marked for closure were specified in a bankruptcy filing and are distributed across 30 states, with 16 locations in California, 11 in New York, and 7 in New Jersey.
Family Dollar to Close 1000 Stores
Dollar Tree announced that it would close nearly 1000 branded stores. They will shut down 600 Family Dollar stores in the first half of 2024, and 370 other stores over the next years, the same as 30 Dollar Tree stores at that period! Recently they were fined $41.6 million due to the presence of rodent activity at the warehouse, which is the main reason for closing hundreds of their stores!
The company also has a net loss of $1.7 billion! Dollar Tree, which acquired Family Dollar nearly a decade ago, has not released a comprehensive list of the locations it is closing but many of the stores are already offering sales of up to 75% off since Monday, March 18th. To take advantage of these deals, you can find the nearest Family Dollar here!
On the other hand, Aldi is opening 800 New Aldi Stores Nationwide!
Giant retailers also kicked off the year with store closures. Store closures are standard practice among traditional retailers who often evaluate the profitability of each location. In this round of closures, however, more retailers are taking the digital experience into consideration as well as the location and appropriate size of their stores. You can find a list of these retailers affected by closures below:
Foot Locker Closing Up to 420 Stores
By 2026, Foot Locker is planning to close up to 420 mall-based stores, and open 300 smaller, freestanding stores!
Journeys Closing Over 100 Stores
Journeys will close over 100 stores this year exceeding their previous closure plans, due to a decline in sales and changing consumer demand. This closer will save the company up to $40 million!
CVS is Closing 900 Stores
From 2022 to 2024, CVS is planning to close 300 stores each year, or a total of 900 stores – 9% of their 10,000 stores across the country. Stores that are more likely to close are in locations where there are already more than enough CVS stores needed.
Some of those stores will not totally close but will be changed to health clinics or CVS HealthHUBs as CVS is looking forward to offering more than just pharmacy services. These are all done to accommodate changing customer habits, including more online shopping and curbside pickup.
Buy Buy Baby Stores Closing Again
BuyBuyBaby Stores are closing their last ten stores! They are now focusing only on online sales and providing the best customer service that way! This process began on October 18th, with it being the last day for in store pickup. If you have a gift card you are able to redeem it until October 31st online only at buybuybaby.com.
If you have a registry, don’t worry! It will still be available but as mentioned before – purchases are online only.
Those with a registry completion code can use it in-store or online. However, registry completion code discounts cannot be combined with in-store discounts.
I stopped in this week and they are still over priced for June at BBB. I ask the cashier and she said they just marked items down to 40% and will close when everything sells… not June 30th. I wish their prices were lower to reflect a closing store. I’m expecting my baby in November and this could extremely help!
They claim it’s huge markdowns but everything is still overpriced
Tuesday Morning is closing stores, too. Here on Amelia Island, Florida, it’s at 40% off and this was basically a 5 year old store in a new building. So sad.
I don’t know how bbb is doing it but many stores use a liquidator when closing. They always start the “markdowns” higher than the store normally had. And often bring in stuff for other stores to thevsale. I rarely find them a deal until the end.
So sad to hear of their closing. When I lived in different states this is the one story I would frequent. I live rural now, so I don’t shop or know where the nearest one is
Just heard of the company just filed for bankruptcy
I went to one of the Bb&B’s closing near me and I was really disappointed in the sale. I saw Christmas items marked back up to full price. One of the cashiers told me the closing stores will be getting a bunch of things from their wear-house and they really aren’t closing until April early may.
ALSO TUESDAY MORNING is closing almost all there stores. I haven’t been able to check out the sell yet, but I have a few around me that are on the closing list I just googled. Keep y’all posted 😘
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the community!
Ditto my experience!!
Looks like there’s a BB&B closing near me. My mom’s been the market for a decently priced heated blanket, so this might be her chance. Thank you for this information!
Yay! I really hope she scores!
The BB&B closing near me has a bunch of heated blankets on sale. Near-closing stores also get new inventory daily, so I’m hoping she can snag one!
Wow, I wouldn’t have expected any of the stores to get new inventory at this point. That’s great to know, and thank you!
I recently bought a king size heated blanket from Amazon on sale for $89
That is a GREAT PRICE. The brand is called BESTCHIC. It’s warm and cozy.
Best of luck to you 💕
Hmmm you’re right, this brand does look pretty comfy. It’s a bit out of my mom’s price range, but I’ll keep an eye on it to see if the price drops. Thank you for the recommendation! 🥰
Thanks for the detailed post!
You’re most welcome Tanz!
Our store in Quincy, IL is also closing! Everything is 30% off and said to go up the closer they get to their shut down day!
