Yes, I wish that Walgreens and all of the other retailers would donate their unsold clothing. For retailers selling clothing, they feel that donating their unsold clothing devalues the brand and places it in the hands of competitors. Basically, everyone is viewed as a competitor with the resale economy. So, 10-40% of new clothing ends up in landfills instead to prevent competition as a business strategy, despite the negative social and environmental impacts, which could look very unfavorable if customers value ethics and sustainability.
Apparently, tons of people dumpster dive at retailers, malls, shopping centers, etc. to recover the discarded items and score big time with clothing, cosmetics, toys, all types of products. Some people are saying high-end retail dumpster diving is the next evolution of extreme couponing, while others view it as kinda disgusting. Others applaud the dumpster divers for rescuing items from a landfill. I am very intrigued by the different viewpoints on the issue of clothing waste and sustainability, and curious what your perspective is! Whether you prefer clearance shopping or high end dumpster diving, a lot of clothing will hopefully be diverted from the landfill!

An employee at Walgreens told me that they don’t donate the clearance clothing items that don’t sell; the unused clothing ends up in the dumpster! I could not believe it.

Not everyone no. You think these big corporations care? Because they moved the pride stuff to the back of the store and in certain neighborhoods didn’t display it? There’s reasons for certain neighborhoods such as the inner city, Englewood, Chicago is a big one and so its not who you assum it was. One day will do nothing when people have to probably spend extra money the next week.
